--I asked a Canadian colleague for help in finding “good
things” my medical students could listen to. Here is her helpful response.
1. What better way to understand English
culture than to listen to the children's stories that form the basis of
many of our common sayings? Storynory.com is a great site that has stories
of all kinds and you can also read the story as it is being told (by a
British woman). The spoken and written texts are not always exactly the
same but it is excellent practice in listening to fluent English.
2. cbc.com (Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation) has many of its broadcasts available on "podcast". The items
are very interesting and vary in length from 5 to 20 minutes or so.
3. 2a.cdc.gov/podcasts/ is from the Centre
for Disease Control in the US. Medical students will like these programs
about different kinds of diseases and how they can be prevented and
controlled.
4. Do a websearch on any topic - for
example <<dinosaurs podcast>> or <<dinosaur mp3>> and you will get a list
of things to choose from. Some podcasts are only in the ipod format and
need access to itunes. When I tried <<vocabulary podcasts>> I found lots
of sites that took interesting words, defined and explained them and then
gave sample sentences. It was great for my students.
There is more detailed
information below!! |
Here are essays from my
students (in random order), promoting various websites that can help you

changed, but I encourage you to give these links a try.

The following are
reviews,
written by my medical students in Kunming, 2007, 2008 & 2009. |
Englishmed.com is an English-language website that presents medical
topics, including materials to help you learn English, particularly in the
context of writing and speaking abilities. In it, you can not only get
information about your medical specialty, but also whatever interests you.
Type www.englishmed.com into your
browser, and click "enter" on the keyboard. On the left of your screen you
can see the main sections of the website. Look down to find "log in" and
click "create new account," then type in your data. After registering,
come back to "home," and then you can choose your specialty or what
interests you. This website is very useful because you can also use their
"search" box to find what you need, click on "exercises" to practice your
English, see helpful "dialogues" (animated!), or link to a "resources
centre." Englishmed.com is a very good website because its pages and
resources help you to upgrade your medical English level, especially in
your professional specialty. (Team E: Maggie, Linda, Persephone, Sophia, Ethan; 2007)
Founded in April
1996, “the Self-Study MEDICAL English Site”
is specially designed for first-year students taking medical English at
Turku University, Finland, who are doing the Internet Course option. This
site contains four main areas. 1. On-line terminology: The section is
composed of medical terminology, and it is renewed each week on Fridays.
It can enlarge your medical English vocabulary, and it can help you cope
with medical English texts. 2. Terminology Quizzes: After each course, you
can take a final test about terminology to check how well you learned the
material. 3. Medical Links: You can link to Medline plus to look for many
authorities’ abstracts, reviews and journals from NLM, NIH, and other
government agencies and health-related organizations. 4. Academic Reading:
You can find a lot of useful guidance on how to deal with academic texts.
Turku University’s medical English site is not fancy and the pages may
load slowly in China, but its reading and listening resources are
particularly valuable; the more you use, the better your special medical
English will become. (Team G: Gao Chang, Chen Min, Rose, Daniel, Tanya;
2007)
Medical Terminology Web (http://ec.hku.hk/mt/;
NOTE, as of 2013 this had been removed, but you can find many of the
original features at
http://www2.caes.hku.hk/caes1511/medical-terminology/
)
is an English medical-terminology website. It provides several resources
to help you understand the formation and definition of medical terms,
primarily by explaining the parts of words. The subjects of main
pages are shown here in bold type. Prefixes and suffixes
are added to the beginning or ending of a word (respectively) to form
another word. Studying medical word roots (such as cardio-
and ped-) teaches you about the main meaning of a word. Self
assessment tasks test your recognition of medical prefixes, suffixes
and word roots. A pronunciation page lets you see and hear the
sounds used in medical terms. The website even has a searchable
glossary, specially designed to show how medical terms are formed.
Most of these pages are interactive so you have to guess the meaning of
prefixes, terms, etc., before seeing the answer. This makes it challenging
and educational. By focusing on the parts of words, Medical
Terminology Web helps students to build and actively use medical
vocabulary. (Team K: Puredoctor,
Julie, Robin, Wan Jia, Judia; 2007)
Oxy Medical English Information Network (www.medicaleng.com)
is a free web site, which features information on medicine and nursing in
Chinese and English. Twelve bilingual tabs at the top of each page take
you to major parts. Medicine (医学英语),
Nursing (护理英语)
and News (医学新闻)
provide bilingual articles. Dictionary (专业词典),
which is an on-line translating tool, can help people learn new terms.
Reference (学习参考)
recommends some English materials and their download addresses, as well as
several English-learning websites. Literature (医护文书)
gives some examples on how to write a patient history, medical record
review, etc. Pharmacy (医药大全)
gives information about many drugs in English and Chinese, making it an
electric drug dictionary. The Exam (考试培训)
and Overseas (出国指南)
tabs offer useful information to those who want to go abroad for further
study. In Forum (社区论坛),
people can freely exchange information. Home (首页)
and About us (关于我们)
tell about the website itself. Medicaleng.com's bilingual layout makes it
easy to use (even if you don't read much Chinese), and the website's
dictionary, drug information, bilingual articles and reference sections
are particularly convenient and useful for medical students who are
learning English. (Team R: Sharron, Iris, Emma, Mason, Winson;
2007)
MedlinePlus (http://medlineplus.gov/),
part of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, can be used to answer
health questions and watch surgery videos, and it also has information
about drugs, interactive patient tutorials, and the latest health news. On
the home page, nine tabs at the left lead visitors to major parts, and
four useful links are at the right. Health Topics presents
information about all body systems, and includes photographs of body parts
and an alphabetical list of illnesses. Drugs & Supplements explains
the usage, dosing, special precautions, and side effects of various drugs.
Dictionary will help when new terms pop up. News, which is
updated every day, gives the latest health information. Medical students
will find Interactive Tutorials (互动教学) extremely helpful, because
it discusses most diseases and when you select one, you find the symptoms,
causes, treatments, and prevention advice described by slideshows (幻灯片)
with sound and pictures. It’s like taking free English medical courses.
Another special characteristic is Surgery Videos (手术录像), offering
prerecorded webcasts (网上直播) of surgical procedures, which is good for your
listening practice. MedlinePlus.gov, with audio/video/text information on
health, medicines, surgery and more, not only improves your medical
English but also enhances your professional knowledge. (Team R: Gregory,
Angela, Atlas, Lacy, Selma, Zhong Xiao-bin, Burk, Tracy;
2008)
HJ English Net (http://www.hjenglish.com/)
is a Chinese-based free online platform for English learners of different
levels, which has an abundance of sections and encouraging interactive
communities. The home page has twenty-four abbreviation-tabs that help you
navigate within the website. For example, click Listening and Speaking
(听说) and you will find many listening materials from VOA, BBC, and CNN.
Star-teacher Blog (名师博客) has advice from teachers at prestigious
schools about learning foreign languages. CET, IELTS (雅思), BEC (商英), TEM
(专英), and PETS (公共英语) are for the different English tests. Tribe
(部落), Program (节目) and Team (小组) are main interactive
communities where you can select original articles and practice English
online every day. Other tabs offer individuals the chance to ask
questions, take tests, look up words, and more. With 24 tabs to choose
from, offering an abundance of learning opportunities using encouraging
methods, HJ English Net will put you into an active English-learning
environment that takes the drudgery (苦差事) out of studying English. (Team

The bilingual website
for Peking University Health Science Center
(PUHSC; http://english.bjmu.edu.cn)
is a wonderful place for Chinese English-learners to learn about this
famous university, its affiliated hospitals, current research, and the
school’s international programs. The front page shows you the site’s main
sections and also tells you about the address, campus life, scenery at
PUHSC, library and alumni. The main sections are Academics, Hospitals,
Research and Cooperation. You can find out about the schools
and departments in the Academics part; just click your relevant
discipline and check it out. The Hospitals section tells you about
each affiliated hospital and shows their competitive ability, which aims
to attract patients to these hospitals and show how many resources they
have. By clicking the Research tab, you can investigate PUHSC’s key
scientific research institutions. According to the website, they have “20
national key disciplines, 1 national key laboratory, 10 key laboratories
for the Ministry of Health or the Ministry of Education, and over 50
institutes and research centers.” Finally, the Cooperation section
tells you about the exchange activities and programs PUHSC has set up with
lots of famous foreign counterparts. This may be your ticket to study
opportunities abroad. The PUHSC website can promote your English learning,
introduce you to a great school, and inspire you to continue your studies
in Beijing or aboard in the future. (Team

Nature.com (www.nature.com)
is an interesting website that presents important breakthroughs and
articles in the realms of science and medicine. The contents are abundant,
including blogs, downloadable podcasts, medical articles and recent
research. Through reading articles on the web site, we can increase our
vocabulary and build our ability to understand medica] information in
English. If you read and study the research reports, you can learn about
the thinking behind English thesis writing. I like reading the research
reports related to my major, from which I can learn about the newest
research hotspots all over the world. The site also has a Chinese
"regional website," so we can read some of the articles in both English
and Chinese. Since nature.com offers English-learners current information,
new vocabulary, and insights into advanced-level English, it is very
useful to help us improve our English and knowledge levels. (Team L:
Gloria, Tina, Yuan Limei, Yu Guihui, Henry; 2007)
Putclub. The website
www.putclub.com is a Chinese-language
based website that aims to help people who want to improve their listening
English. It is divided into seven parts. (1) DAILY ENGLISH (每日听力) offers
training materials for English listening learning. (2) GENERAL LISTENING
MATERIALS (每日泛听) presents materials mostly originating from English
teaching programs, such as those on BBC and CNN. (3) E-BOOKS (听力E书) is a
free, downloadable collection of audio books. (4) In CLASSIFIED LISTENING
PROGRAM (分类听力), people can choose material from several classifications:
special, standard, audiovisual, multi-subjects, spoken English and
informal academic & cultural talk. (5) LISTENING GUIDE (听力指南) presents
approaches to auditory training. (6) LISTENING MATERIALS (听力资源) supplies
recordings for vocabulary and listening comprehension, and useful courses
such as "step by step" and "listen to this". (7) In THE FORUM (听力论坛),
people can get information by communicating with others. The "put" here
stands for "Postgraduate students + Undergraduate students + Teachers".
Putclub.com is a valuable website for anybody who wants to improve his
listening skills; everybody will find some useful information and training
programs for themselves. (Team F: Helen, Zoe,
Seawind, Fisher, Echo; 2007)
New Oriental (www.neworiental.org)
is a famous corporation in China that helps many Chinese people to improve
their English. I like their Chinese-language-based website because it
offers a wide selection of useful content and allows me to actively
practice English on-line. Some of the website's main features include
topical news (新闻纪事),
language training (报班),
test preparation (考试),
international study preparation (留学),
online education (网上教育),
life (人生),
and campus (校园).
In addition, you can register a blog (博客)
or participate in a forum (论坛)
on the website, so you can communicate with others to use and improve your
English. The New Oriental web site is in Chinese, so those who can't read
Chinese won't find it helpful; there are, however, several explanatory
pages in English. But all the information and the news you find on the
website are free. I visit www.neworiental.org often to chat in a forum or
scan the news about domestic and international issues, and I recommend
this website for every Chinese English learner. (Team U: Terry, Ding
Lin-fen, Gao Ying-ying, Wu Lin-xiong, Xiao Yu-liang;
2007)
Mededucation. The web site
http://mededucation.bjmu.edu.cn/ is a double-languagebased website,
supported by the China Medical Board, that aims to build an enlightening
and dynamic center for learning medical English. It's eight main parts are
listed here in English and Chinese. First, medical news (医学新闻)
offers the latest news in medical and related areas. In case research
(案例研究),
we can find many realistic and classical cases that we can't easily find
in books. Part 3 is reporting and reference (报告及参考).
This has excellent articles in several classifications, such as basic
medicine, clinical medicine and public health. Medical writing and
editing (写作编辑)
presents lots of useful methods and skills to help you write a perfect
report (if you already have a comprehensive grasp of the vocabulary). The
vocabulary (医学词汇)
section gives us plenty of medical words and phases and includes several
kinds of online dictionaries. In parts 6 and 7 the website provides quite
a few free downloadable audios and videos. Finally, if you want to
communicate with other people interested in medicine, you can choose to
enter part 8, the forum (医学论坛).
With helpful sections like medical news, forum and
reporting and reference, the "mededucation" website is a valuable
place for anybody interested in medical English. (Team T: Kitty, David,
Lucy, Trudy, Jane; 2007) (Note from Michael: I've had trouble viewing this
website in Kunming, but my students have access on campus.) NOTE: in
March 2010, I couldn't reach this site.
Audiomedica,
Medical News Interviews (www.audiomedica.com),
is a remarkable British website that presents free audio interviews for
clinical doctors and medical professionals on a range of topics including
global health, oncology (肿瘤学), medicine and cardiovascular (心血管的) issues.
There are eleven icons at the top of the homepage. For example, by
clicking on Archives (档案馆), you can find materials in two ways--by
Category and Month. Unfortunately, none of the recorded
interviews on the topics mentioned above are presented with text, so
non-native English users may find them hard to understand. But the website
has a convenient way to download and listen to the articles; the audio
player is built in, so all you have to do is click (no software needed).
Most of the materials relate to the latest clinical research findings
published in the core medical journals and to international
conferences/meetings. Audiomedica.com is a unique medical website because
it presents oral interviews with medical experts in the fields of
cardiology, oncology, medicine or global health, and delivers the latest
research findings. (Team R: Gregory, Angela, Atlas, Lacy, Selma, Zhong
Xiao-bin, Burk, Tracy;
2008)

The Thomson-Reuters website (thomsonreuters.com/products_
services/healthcare.htm) is a useful place for students who want to
improve their English while learning about medical resources and
scientific research. This website claims to be “the world’s leading source
of intelligent information for businesses and professionals”. It consists
of six parts: Financial, Healthcare, Legal, Media, Science and
Tax & Accounting. Visiting Healthcare, you can get a lot of
information on medical skills and the latest research. This section is
relevant to your studies and can enhance your competitive intelligence.
The Legal section can tell you how to protect your achievements,
such as your published papers. Media can introduce new scientific
and medical innovations to you, while you may search 16,000 journal titles
in the science part—both of these can be helpful when doing
research. The Financial and Tax & Accounting sections relate
to the Thomson-Reuters company, but Chinese medical students might take a
quick look, if only to get a glimpse of the American “world of tax
complexity”. Thomsonreuters.com is designed for native English speakers,
so English-learners will find its content challenging, but those who
accept this challenge will find a helpful hand for future research, and a
vast resource for information about scientific and medical innovation. (Team

Harvard University. A useful website operated by America’s most
famous university, www.harvard.edu
introduces you to this top-seat university (and Harvard Medical School)
through pictures, school-related news, and library information. The
website has three main sections: Schools, Offices, and
About Harvard. Click School and you can find out about Harvard
University’s different majors. Simply select your specialty or what
interests you. For example, if you choose Medical, then you can use
their "search" box to find what you need, or link to "resources," which
provides useful links such as Publications and Technology
Development. Click Office, and you can find Harvard’s
libraries. Harvard has put many things from its vast collection
on-line. Furthermore, this on-line library not only provides good
resources, but also supplies readers with useful research tools, which is
helpful for your academic experiments. The pages and resources on
Harvard’s website (www.harvard.edu) can help you to upgrade your medical
English level, learn about a world-famous place, and also supply you with
current medical research in almost every discipline, especially in your
professional specialty. (Team
