"Above
there is Heaven; below there is Suzhou and Hangzhou"
Chinese Proverb
These
photos, taken with a primitive digital camera in 2000, don't do justice to
these famous and beautiful cities, but they are all we have for now.
Someday, maybe we can return!
Suzhou
was well-known for it’s canals and gardens before Columbus discovered
America—AND before Marco Polo introduced China to Europe!
The water lilies were breathtaking at this Suzhou
garden.
Countless landscape paintings feature the mountains, bridges, and West
Lake of Hangzhou.
Hangzhou's Six Harmonies tower dates back to 970. The Qiantang
River bridge was likewise considered a great achievement around 75 years
ago.
Marco Polo loved Hangzhou in the springtime, and this was definitely NOT
spring! But the area is still charming in the cold and rain.
